General information about mykie®
Cooperation
The mykie® treatment is more than just an early orthodontic concept—it is an active development process that relies on cooperation, motivation, and continuous support. In order for children to benefit from the functional improvements in the long term, their own cooperation is just as important as the support of their parents.
Child-friendly
Motivation that grows with you
To ensure that practicing at home does not become a chore, but rather a personal success story, our practice works with a child-friendly reward system that makes progress visible and documents it regularly. The mykie® trainer, a functional training device, plays a central role in this process: its consistent use is recorded, evaluated, and, with continuous cooperation, rewarded.
Depending on individual development, a small palatal appliance may be necessary as a supplement. This helps to compensate for any lack of width growth in the upper jaw. This appliance is designed so that it hardly restricts the child’s everyday life – normal speaking and eating remain possible.
After Treatment
When does the treatment end – and what happens next?
The active mykie® treatment phase is usually completed after about 18 months, when key functional goals have been achieved: free nasal breathing, correct swallowing, and stable tongue position at the palate. This lays the foundation for further jaw growth to develop independently and harmoniously.
However, even after the active therapy phase, the child’s development continues. Quarterly check-ups at our practice ensure that everything is progressing as it should, provide guidance, and allow for minor aesthetic adjustments if necessary However, such measures are usually not necessary, as mykie® effectively addresses the causes of tooth misalignment.
Costs
Cost coverage: What does health insurance cover?
In Germany, statutory health insurance providers (GKV) follow clearly defined criteria that focus primarily on visible tooth and jaw misalignments. Preventive treatment approaches such as those offered by mykie® are therefore not covered in many cases, unless there is already a significant finding.
Cost coverage by the GKV is only possible for children between the ages of 6 and 10 if one of the following criteria is met:
- lateral crossbite (the upper jaw is significantly too narrow)
- frontal crossbite (the upper front teeth bite behind the lower teeth)
- frontal overbite > 9 mm
Private health insurance companies, supplementary insurance, and private insurance, on the other hand, often recognize the benefits of early treatment and cover all or part of the costs, depending on the selected plan. It is advisable to consult with the respective insurer at an early stage.
Teamwork
Parents as companions
The mykie® treatment thrives on cooperation between the child, parents, team of therapists, and, if necessary, other specialists. The closer this connection, the more lasting the results. With targeted guidance, regular feedback, and a motivating framework, the treatment becomes a joint process in which children not only grow healthier, but also develop self-efficacy and responsibility.
